The types and reasons for a dove release are restricted only by the imagination. The most common releases are for weddings and funerals but many releases are done for special occasions. We have participated in large public events and events as small as a backyard graduation party. Following is a list of a few of the special occasion releases we have participated in the past.
Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure: White Wings has participated in four Races for the Cure in Wichita releasing as many as 80 doves at the closing ceremony at Towne East Mall to celebrate survivors and to pay tribute to those who have lost the ultimate battle.
9/11 Memorial: This is a national release coordinated by White Wings Over America with over 5000 doves released in the United States and Canada to commemorate the horrible tragedy that occurred in 2001. The ceremony is held locally at the Kansas Firefighter Museum at Lincoln and Broadway with the enthusiasm and assistance of the Kansas Firefighter Museum, Wichita Fire Department and Sedgwick County Fire Department. In the past this event has included several speakers, an honor guard, vocal tributes by the South High Madrigals and a special flyover by the Commemorative Air Force Jayhawk Wing.
National Adoption Day Ceremony: This event was sponsored in Wichita by the St. Francis Community Services and held at Exploration Place. Several local celebrities were in attendance as well as several local judges. The judges finalized 42 adoptions on that day and one dove was released for each adopted child plus one extra dove to honor my adopted child.
Maple Grove Cemetery Anniversary: Our largest release ever was held in December of 2012 to celebrate the 125th Anniversary of the Maple Grove Cemetery near 9th and Hillside. A marker was placed on the grave of the first two souls (unnamed baby twins) buried there. 125 birds filled the sky on that beautiful day.
Kansas Firefighter's Memorial: This is an annual ceremony to honor those brave Kansas Firefighters from all over the state who have made the ultimate sacrifice. 2013 was White Wing's fourth year to conduct a release at the Memorial at the Kansas Firefighter's Museum.
